Both vendors solve the same problem: confidential email that reaches the recipient without anyone distributing certificates by hand. They do it differently. This page puts operating model, hosting, method and module scope side by side and backs every statement about Zivver with a public source.

Conbool is an email security suite from Germany with nine modules, running as a cloud service or on-premises; the contracting party is Conbool GmbH in Hamburg. Zivver states on its security page that user data is held in a Virtual Private Cloud across certified data centres in the European Union, currently AWS eu-west-1, and its home page presents Zivver as a Kiteworks company headquartered in Silicon Valley. If you need S/MIME and PGP at the gateway, Conbool covers it; if you must demonstrate the Dutch healthcare standard NEN 7510, Zivver holds that certification.

Where does the data sit, and who is the contracting party?

Conbool

Hosting in Germany, the contracting party is Conbool GmbH in Hamburg, owner-managed and without a parent company outside the EU.

ZivverZivver

Zivver states that user data is stored in a Virtual Private Cloud across several ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certified data centres in the European Union, currently in AWS data centres in the eu-west-1 region. The home page presents Zivver as a Kiteworks company, headquartered in Silicon Valley.

For many organisations the question is not whether the data sits in the EU but who controls it and which law the parent company answers to. Both vendors store in the EU; the ownership structure differs.

Which encryption method is used?

Conbool

S/MIME and PGP at the gateway, with nothing to install for the user. Recipients without a certificate get the message portal or an encrypted PDF.

ZivverZivver

Zivver describes its own method: messages are encrypted with AES, the symmetric key asymmetrically with RSA 2048. The key is derived from the user password or the SSO secret; Zivver states that it stores neither the secret nor private decryption keys.

If you correspond with partners who require S/MIME or PGP, you need those standards at the gateway. If you mostly reach recipients without keys of their own, a portal method works well.

Nine modules on one platform: spam and phishing protection, encryption, file transfer, archiving, signatures, DMARC reporting, 365 Backup, awareness and continuity.

ZivverZivver

The website lists Secure Email, Email Threat Protection, a DMARC service called Secure Your Domain, and awareness training.

The more building blocks come from one source, the fewer interfaces and contracts. If archiving and backup already run elsewhere, that weighs differently.

Which certifications and standards are demonstrated?

Conbool

Conbool does not hold the Dutch NEN 7510 standard. For the German market the focus is GDPR compliance, data processing with a German contracting party, and the NIS2 requirements.

ZivverZivver

Zivver states that it is certified to ISO 27001:2022 and NEN 7510:2024, plus SOC 2 Type 2 and Cyber Essentials Plus.

NEN 7510 is the Dutch information security standard for healthcare. Where a tender requires it, only a certified vendor qualifies. Outside that context it does not apply.

Migration

How a switch works

The path is the same as for any change in the mail flow and needs no cut-off date with downtime.

  1. Take stock

    Which domains, which mailboxes, which groups of recipients are affected? That produces the rule list.

  2. Set up in parallel

    Conbool is added as a second path while the existing service keeps running. Two test mailboxes are enough for the first pass.

  3. Move the rules

    Rules, exceptions and recipient lists are carried over and checked one by one.

  4. Switch and watch

    The mail flow is switched over; message tracing shows every delivery. The previous service stays reachable until the observation period ends.

  5. Shut down

    The old path is cancelled only once nothing runs through it any more.

Access to older messages in your current service is governed by that vendor's terms. Please clarify retention and export with them before cancelling.

  • S/MIME and PGP are needed at the gateway, with nothing installed for users.
  • On-premises operation is a requirement, or should remain possible.
  • Archiving, signatures, backup and continuity should come from the same platform.
  • Contracting party and hosting should be in Germany.

Zivver fits when

  • NEN 7510 has to be demonstrated, for example in Dutch healthcare.
  • The focus is secure email; further modules are not needed.
  • Work should happen in the browser and in Outlook or Gmail.
  • A method without S/MIME and PGP key management is explicitly preferred.
