Both are full business mailboxes. The difference lies in the scope around them and in the operation.
Conbool Mail
When it is about the mailbox
- You need email, calendar and contacts, but no bundle of Office, Teams and cloud storage.

Archive mailbox
A second mailbox for older messages that takes load off the inbox. Exchange Online calls it the archive mailbox, Conbool Mail the online archive. Both provide 50 GB in Plan 1 and 100 GB in Plan 2, and Microsoft expands it to 1.5 TB in Plan 2 on request.
Tamper-proof archiving
An archive outside the mailbox where messages are stored unalterably and which users cannot empty. With Conbool Mail it is part of Plan 2, with 100 GB per mailbox. Exchange Online Plan 2 handles retention through litigation hold and retention policies inside the mailbox.

And the Microsoft 365 bundles?
Many do not compare Exchange Online on its own, but a bundle. Each contains an Exchange Online mailbox plus further services.
Microsoft 365 Business Basic
Includes a 100 GB Exchange Online mailbox plus Teams, OneDrive and the Office apps in the browser. Conbool Mail replaces the mailbox, not the other services.
Microsoft 365 Business Standard
Like Business Basic, plus the installable Office apps. If you already license Word and Excel another way, you only need the mailbox for email.
Office 365 F3
For staff without a fixed workplace, with a 2 GB mailbox. The counterpart at Conbool Mail is the Kiosk with 5 GB.

Migrate from Microsoft 365 to Conbool Mail.
Migration in the portal brings over messages, calendars and contacts from Microsoft 365. It runs in the background and can be followed for each mailbox.
Questions about the comparison
What is the difference between Exchange Online Plan 1 and Plan 2?
Plan 1 provides a 50 GB mailbox and a 50 GB archive mailbox. Plan 2 provides 100 GB in the mailbox and an archive mailbox that can be expanded up to 1.5 TB, plus features for retention and litigation hold. Conbool Mail is tiered the same way: Plan 1 with 50 GB and a 50 GB online archive, Plan 2 with 100 GB, a 100 GB online archive and compliant archiving.
Is Conbool Mail a hosted Exchange?
No. Conbool Mail is a mailbox service of its own with open protocols: IMAP, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV and Exchange ActiveSync. The tiers and the administration are modelled on Exchange Online, the server is not Microsoft Exchange.
Does Outlook work with Conbool Mail?
Yes, for email via IMAP and SMTP. Calendar and contacts are available in webmail, on the smartphone through Exchange ActiveSync and in clients with CalDAV and CardDAV. Outlook for Windows does not support CalDAV and CardDAV out of the box.
Can I keep Microsoft 365 and switch only the mailboxes?
Yes. Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and the Office apps keep running independently of the mailbox. You switch the DNS records for email to Conbool Mail and bring over the mailboxes with migration in the portal.
What does Conbool Mail cost compared to Microsoft 365?
