PGP – Flexible and Decentralized Email Security

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is a powerful standard for email encryption and signature.

Functions of PGP

Similar to S/MIME, PGP enables secure communication through two essential functions:

  1. Encryption:
    • Protects the content of your messages from unauthorized access, as they can only be decrypted by the intended recipient.
    • Perfect for confidential information, such as personal data or sensitive documents.
  2. Signature:
    • Confirms the authenticity and integrity of your messages.
    • The recipient can ensure that the message actually comes from you and has not been altered.

Guide: Creation and Management of Key Pairs

PGP is based on the use of key pairs – a public key (for encryption) and a private key (for decryption). Here's how you can create and manage these in the vault:

  1. Navigate to the Cryptography section:
    • In the dashboard, you'll find the menu item "Cryptography". Click on it and select the "PGP" tab.
  2. Create new key pair:
    • Click on "Create key pair".
    • Enter a name for the key pair (e.g., "Marketing Team").
    • Choose the desired key length (recommended: 2048 or 4096 bits).
  3. Export public key:
    • After the key pair has been created, you can export the public key and share it with your communication partners.
  4. Securely store private key:
    • The private key is automatically stored in the vault and is only accessible to authorized users.
  5. Import keys (optional):
    • If you already have an existing key pair, you can add it using the "Import key" function.
